A year after the coup in Honduras the OAS is still evaluating its return to the organization

One year passed since the coup that overthrew President Zelaya and Honduras still remains suspended from the OAS.

The OAS General Assembly still does not approve the reincorporation of Honduras to the organization because the new government is in breach of some of the requirements demanded by the rest of countries in the region. Even when the administration of Porfirio Lobo maintains that Honduras should be able to rejoin the OAS, some countries sustain that it still haven’t fulfilled all of the requirements set forth in the Agreement of Tegucigalpa – San José (for national reconciliation and the strengthening of democracy in Honduras).

Similarly, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights after its last visit in May reiterated its concern about the persistence of human rights violations, particularly to the detriment of journalists, human rights defenders and members of Resistencia.
